Why Your Electric Bill Is So High in Summer and What Your AC Has to Do With It

Every June, without fail, we start getting calls that go something like this: “My bill was $180 in April and now it’s $340. Nothing changed. What is going on?”

Something did change, of course. The temperature. But that answer alone doesn’t help you, so let’s actually get into it.

If you’re sitting in Central Florida in July watching your electric bill climb toward numbers that used to seem impossible, your AC is almost certainly the main driver. Cooling a home here accounts for 40 to 60 percent of the average household’s electricity use during summer months, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. And when something’s even slightly off with your system, that percentage goes up fast.

Here’s what we actually see causing high summer bills, and what you can do about each one.

Your AC Is Running Longer Than It Should

An air conditioner that runs almost constantly isn’t necessarily broken. In a Florida July, it might just be keeping up with demand. But there’s a difference between a system working hard and a system struggling.

If your AC runs for long stretches and the house still doesn’t reach the set temperature, that’s the system struggling. Common causes include a dirty air filter, low refrigerant, a failing capacitor, or coils that are caked with dust and debris. Each of those problems forces the compressor to work harder and longer, which translates directly into electricity consumption.

We had a customer in Lake County earlier this summer who was paying nearly $400 a month. When our tech got out there, the evaporator coil was so restricted with buildup that airflow was about half what it should have been. One cleaning service call later, his system was running full cycles and stopping. His next bill dropped by over $80.

Sometimes the fix is simple. But you won’t know until someone looks at it.

The Age and Efficiency of Your System

This one is uncomfortable to bring up because it involves money. But it’s real.

A 12 to 15-year-old AC unit might still be cooling your home. It just costs a lot more to do it than a modern system would. SEER ratings, the efficiency measurement used for air conditioners, have improved dramatically over the past decade. An older system might run at 10 or 12 SEER. A new high-efficiency unit can hit 18 to 20 SEER2 or higher.

That gap is not trivial. ENERGY STAR estimates replacing an older system with a certified high-efficiency model can cut cooling costs by 20% or more. On a $320 summer bill, that’s $64 a month back in your pocket. Over a year of Central Florida cooling season, that adds up.

Air Leaks and Insulation: The AC’s Invisible Enemy

Your AC doesn’t just fight outdoor heat. It fights all the ways that heat sneaks into your home.

In Central Florida, attic temperatures in July can reach 140 to 150 degrees Fahrenheit. If your attic insulation is thin or your air barrier is compromised, that heat radiates down into the living space and your AC runs constantly trying to compensate.

Same goes for ductwork. Leaky ducts in an unconditioned attic are one of the biggest energy wasters in Florida homes, and they’re also one of the most overlooked. You’re paying to cool air that’s escaping into your attic before it ever reaches your living room. That’s a real problem, and it’s more common than most homeowners realize.

Sealing ducts, adding attic insulation, and checking door and window seals are all things that cost relatively little but compound into real savings over a Florida summer.

Your Thermostat Settings and Habits

Okay, this one is on all of us at some point.

A thermostat set to 70 degrees in a Florida July is going to run your system aggressively, full stop. Each degree lower you go costs more. Duke Energy and most utility companies suggest 78 degrees when you’re home and 82 to 85 when you’re away as the sweet spot for comfort versus cost in Florida.

A programmable or smart thermostat can automate this. It lets you set schedules so the house isn’t being cooled to 72 while you’re at work. If you’re still running a manual thermostat in 2026, upgrading to a smart model is probably the single cheapest change with the fastest payback.

That said, if you’ve already got a smart thermostat set to reasonable temperatures and the bill is still high, the problem is the equipment or the building envelope, not the settings.

When a Tune-Up Fixes the Problem

A lot of high-bill situations don’t require a new system. They require a properly maintained one.

During a professional AC tune-up, we check refrigerant levels, inspect the capacitor and contactor, clean the coils, test airflow, and verify the system is operating within manufacturer specs. A system that’s running at 80% efficiency due to maintenance neglect will cost significantly more to operate than one that’s been properly serviced.

In Central Florida, we recommend servicing your system at least once a year. Twice is better, especially on older units. The cost of a tune-up is almost always less than a single month’s excess electric bill from a system that’s running inefficiently.

The Bill Doesn’t Have to Stay That High
